Tamzin Merchant (Carnival Row), Edmund Kingsley (T.I.M.), and Raffiella Chapman (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) have joined the inspired-by-true-events horror The Caged, Deadline reports today.

The Caged begins principal photography next month in the UK.

The film draws from history and follows “a family that is terrorized by a dark presence after they move into a quaint cottage.  Uncovering its history, they discover their once dream home lies on the site of a medieval prison set aside for those accused of witchcraft, including England’s most notorious witch, hanged in 1582.”

While that logline doesn’t which witch may have inspired The Caged, the 1582 clue suggests it could, perhaps, draw from Ursula Kemp, a woman who confessed to witchcraft and murder before being hanged. Then again, Essex, England alone is notorious for the daunting volume of witchcraft trials over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. There’s no shortage of grisly history to pull from here.

Jeffrey Scott Collins writes and directs the witchy horror movie.

“Several years ago, I woke up one morning with a random notion that I need to write a horror film that is set in England,” Collins told Deadline. “I had no idea where that thought came from. But I started doing some research on the most haunted places in England and found this incredible true story that The Caged is inspired by. Not only is the history of this house truly terrifying, but thematically, it touches upon social issues that are still very relevant today. Much like my favorite horror films, The Caged will be very grounded and real and centered around complex and layered characters.”

Collins also produces under his banner, This Seems Reel Entertainment, alongside producer Gaby Whyte Hart at Fearless Productions, Rupert Hollier at Filmtrax, Joe Grano at Set Point Entertainment, and Llewelynn Greeff at Dark Matter Studios.

The Caged also heads to EFM this week for sales acquisition, so stay tuned.
