Last year, Director Neill Blomkamp’s (District 9, Demonic) was set to tackle alien abduction horror movie They Found Uswith star Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad). Now, Deadline reports that both have left the project and Julius Avery (The Pope’s Exorcist, Overlord) has taken the directorial reins.
With Kinnaman no longer attached, casting is underway as production is aiming to shoot in Australia in the first half of 2025.
In They Found Us, “a father and daughter undertake a camping trip in the Utah wilderness to heal their broken relationship. Attacked by a hostile extraterrestrial lifeform, their lives, not just their relationship, are at stake as they fight with a humanoid beast to stop their abduction to an unknown and terrifying alien world.”
Temple Hill Entertainment (Smile) is on board to produce They Found Us, which is being retooled and relocated from its initial shooting location in the Saudi region of Neom. The film is based on an original screenplay by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) and is produced by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment. Ford is onboard as an executive producer along with Temple Hill’s John Fischer.
Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey previously said of the film, “The otherworldly horror and breathless suspense at the center of Jeremy’s script is merely the backdrop for an all too relatable and emotional story of a father and teenage daughter grappling with their differences and working through their estrangement.”
