In the wake of Osgood Perkins’ new movie The Monkey scaring up $20 million in its box office debut, The Asylum is offering up a “mockbuster” of their own with The Jolly Monkey.

The Asylum will release The Jolly Monkey in select theaters on February 28 before bringing the film to VOD outlets on March 1. Exclusively watch the official trailer down below.

Like the Osgood Perkins movie based on Stephen King’s short story, The Asylum’s “mockbuster” take on the tale features a creepy monkey toy that serves as a harbinger of doom, but the film’s true monster looks to be a man dressed up in a monkey costume. Outside of that, the synopsis reveals the overall plot has been shamelessly lifted from Perkins’ movie.

In The Jolly Monkey, “Upon their mother’s death, siblings Jenny and Marshall return to renovate her crumbling motel, The Jolly Monkey. But as they work, a deadly force tied to their family’s dark past emerges, forcing them to face terrifying truths if they want to survive.”

The film will open in the following theaters on February 28:

  • Laemmle Glendale (Glendale, CA)
  • Aurora Cineplex (Roswell, GA)
  • Film Noir Cinema (Brooklyn, NY)
  • Hickory Ridge Cinemas (Brunswick, OH)
  • Trylon Cinema (Minneapolis, MN)

Dominic Keating, Jane Hajduk, and Anthony Jensen star.

Ryan Ebert wrote and directed The Jolly Monkey.
