It's been a while since we heard anything about the planned reboot of The Blob, but a new interview with producer David S. Goyer confirms that the sci-fi horror is still in the works, and will update the origins of the gooey monster.

The third take on The Blob, following the 1958 original from Irvin Yeaworth and the 1988 remake from Chuck Russell, is, at the time of writing, still scheduled to be written and directed by David Bruckner (Hellraiser), with Goyer and Keith Levine attached to produce. Rights holder Judith Harris will executive produce.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Goyer teased how a version of The Blob in the 21st century would look different to its 50s and 80s counterparts, and would focus on distinctly modern fears such as “the use of AI and gene editing and the slippery slope of all that work entails”. Goyer also reveals that the origins of the titular fleshy mass have changed, so that the new Blob will be a manmade phenomenon, rather than crashing down to earth via a meteor as in the previous films:

“One of the decisions we made is instead of the Blob coming from space, it’s something that is made in the lab”.

A new take on The Blob in at one point had Rob Zombie (House of 1000 Corpses) signed on to direct a remake, before Simon West (Con Air) eventually took over. Samuel L. Jackson was attached to star in West’s version, though that never came to fruition (more's the pity!)

Look out for more on Bruckner's Blob as we get it.
