Currently murdering the box office and garnering critical acclaim, Zach Cregger's hotly-anticipated Weapons already has Warner Bros. and New Line hungry for more, with a prequel reportedly in talks.

The R-rated Weapons, which stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, Amy Madigan and Austin Abrams, marks the horror sophomore feature of the Barbarian director, and follows citizens of the town of Maybrook in which all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanishes on the same night at exactly the same time, leaving the surrounding community to question who – or what – is behind their disappearance.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, while no deals have been made and no timeline is on the table, the prequel film would apparently focus on the character of Aunt Gladys (Madigan) who SPOILERS AHEAD….  is revealed to be a witch who weaponizes the children of Maybrook, bewitching them into a hypnotized state so that she can feed off their life-force. The segmented structure of Weapons tells the story of Maybrookers in chapters, with THR alleging that Cregger “actually had a chapter focused on Gladys and some of her backstory”, but ended up cutting it for length.

Cregger has previously confirmed that he does have another idea set in the world of Weapons that he is “excited about”, but that fans may have to wait a while. The filmmaker is currently working on his upcoming Resident Evil reboot, set for release on September 18, 2026, as well as an original sci-fi pic apparently titled Flood. However, as we know having experienced Weapons'  torturously mysterious marketing campaign, when it comes to Cregger, patience is a virtue.

Weapons is currently playing in theaters.
