In 1985, FANGORIA made horror history when then–Editor-in-Chief Robert Martin visited the set of George A. Romero's Day of the Dead. What started as a behind-the-scenes report turned into something much bigger: Tom Savini transformed Martin into a zombie. Martin then appeared in the actual film and graced the cover of FANGORIA Issue #43 , showcasing Savini's legendary makeup work. The Editor in Chief's first-person account became one of our all time favorite articles (which you can read in our archives right here).

Forty years later, FANGORIA is honoring that legacy in a new way. Tina Romero, (daughter of George A. Romero), has just made her feature directorial debut with Queens of the Dead. To mark the occasion, FANGORIA once again stepped onto set. This time, Fango contributor Xero Gravity joined the production as a background zombie and landed on the cover of FANGORIA issue #29 alongside Queens of the Dead director Tina Romero, shot by set photographer Liz Ligouri.

  • Xero's set visit is now immortalized on the subscriber-exclusive cover for FANGORIA Issue #29, a retro homage to the classic 1985 cover.
  • Queens of the Dead is gearing up for a major theatrical release this fall (fresh off winning the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival), and FANGORIA readers get the inside story first. Take a look at the official cover below.

Inside this issue, Tina Romero reflects on honoring her dad's legacy while at the same time fiercely forging her own path, and her makeup FX team discusses creating an army of zombies unlike any the screen has ever seen.

In addition to the cover story, you'll also find Fango's usual helping of Guts & Gravy delivering the goods:

Ethan Hawke discusses the Grabber's unlikely return in Black Phone 2; Dan Trachtenberg spills details of Predator: Badlands; regional maniacs Erik and Carson Bloomquist return with a dose of Self-Help, and Guillermo del Toro finally brings his monster to life (and to screens) in Frankenstein.
