People are easy to manipulate in the new teaser for Appofeniacs, a dark horror satire centered around AI and deep fakes from acclaimed music video director Chris Marrs Piliero.

In Appofeniacs, “when Duke goes on a frenzy of reckless deep fake creations, his callous disregard of consequences shows how, with a few clicks on a phone, anyone can create a deceiving video of an unsuspecting victim and ruin their life…or end it.”

Sean Gunn, Jermaine Fowler, Aaron Holliday, Michael Abbott Jr, Simran Jehani, Amogh Kapoor, Will Brandt, Paige Searcy, and Harley Bronwyn star.

“The first time I saw deepfake in 2018, I had two immediate thoughts: This is very cool… and this is going to be used nefariously. I knew I wanted to make a film centered around this technology, but it wasn’t until 2022 that the idea for Appofeniacs fully took hold, fueled by the unsettling reality of what was just around the corner.

“While many stories explore AI’s role in supercomputers and robotics, I wanted to take a different approach: a more grounded (yet cranked to 11) look at how deepfakes can and will wreak havoc in everyday life. Online interactions often feel disconnected from reality, but this technology that we all have in the palm of our hands will be weaponized, both intentionally and unintentionally, in ways we’re only beginning to grasp,” Chris Marrs Piliero said in a statement.

Appofeniacs makes its North American premiere later this week at Fantastic Fest, in Austin, Texas.

The festival warns this title is bringing some memorable kills: “Director Chris Marrs Piliero is an accomplished music video director, and his eye for composition and detail is crystal clear in his astonishingly self-assured first feature. He deftly weaves together seemingly disparate story lines, culminating in a shocking finale. Fans of creative, brutal kills, take note: this one features some of the best of the year.”
