The Buffy the Vampire Slayer documentary Can't Escape the Moonlight: How Buffy Saved a Generation has begun production, and we're quaking in our stylish yet affordable boots to debut the trailer today! (Must be Tuesday, after all):
If you managed to watch that without bursting into tears and/or goosebumps, I salute you, but I do not understand you.
Can't Escape the Moonlight will explore the enduring significance of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of the greatest horror television shows (or any shows) of all time, and you may have noticed that several members of the Fango fam are attached. Paige Troxell (FredHeads: The Documentary) is at the helm as both director and producer, and she says of Can't Escape the Moonlight, “Directing this documentary is the deepest honor of my creative life. Buffy didn’t just save the world, she saved a generation. And that impact was built by more than one voice. This legacy belongs to the writers, actors, composers, crew, stunt teams, and above all, the fans who kept her spirit alive. This is our chance to reclaim the story and honor the people who made it matter.”
Troxell's production company Venn Pictures is teaming up with Rob Alicea and Leaving Normal Productions to produce. Co-producers are Laz Marquez, Kim Gunzinger, Ian Carlos Crawford, Elissa Wagner, and Sharai Bohannon. Heather Rose Wagner is story producer, Matt Sampere is cinematographer, The Lazarus Project will compose the original score, and the trailer features a version of “Can't Fight the Moonlight” by Hales Corner.
Here's more, from the press release:
The Buffy Fandom can expect to see familiar faces like Kristine Sutherland, who played Buffy’s beloved mom Joyce Summers. Mark Metcalf, who brought to life the series' first “Big Bad” known as The Master, Christopher Golden, who has written numerous Buffyverse books and comics, and many more “chosen ones” will be announced soon. The production has partnered with FanGeek Agency who represents many beloved Buffy alums.
The documentary is also highlighting notable Buffy fans who have gone on to become genre staples in their own right; Michael Varrati (Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula), BJ Colangelo (writer at Fangoria, co-host of It Ends at Prom), Harmony Colangelo (co-host of It Ends at Prom, co-writer of Sleepaway Camp, the book), and Meredith Borders (Senior Editor at Fangoria)…
Can't Escape The Moonlight: How Buffy Saved A Generation will incorporate interviews with fans, cast and crew members, as well as genre and pop culture experts. The documentary will explore what made the show such a hit and why it resonated (and still resonates) with viewers. The film will also highlight how Buffy the Vampire Slayer was ahead of its time and inspired a wave of feminist voices in entertainment.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a groundbreaking television series that ran for seven seasons. At its core, the show is a story about a young woman who is chosen to battle the forces of darkness and protect the world from evil beings. Through its witty dialogue, relatable characters, and mix of genres, Buffy explores themes of friendship, love, loss, and growing up.
The beloved series continues to attract new audiences to this day. With the rise of social media, online streaming apps, a cult-like following, and the announcement of the revival series, it shows no signs of slowing down after 28 years. One of the main reasons it still resonates with fans is the emotional connection they feel to the characters and the world they inhabit. Buffy and her friends represent a universal feeling of finding your chosen family.
