In space, no one can hear you scream, but what about when you come back home? That’s the question in the new trailer for The Astronaut, Vertical’s new sci-fi horror film that features Kate Mara as a NASA scientist who finds herself plagued by strange and disturbing events after arriving home from a routine mission that went awry on reentry.

Written and directed by Jess Varley, The Astronaut also stars Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Luna, Ivana Milicevic, Macy Gray, and Scarlett Holmes, and is produced by Brad Fuller, Eric B. Fleischman, Chris Abernathy, and Cameron Fuller. The film’s synopsis is as follows:

When astronaut Sam Walker (Kate Mara) crash lands back to Earth, she’s discovered alive in a punctured capsule off the Atlantic coast. General William Harris (Laurence Fishburne) places her in quarantine under strict NASA surveillance for rehabilitation and testing. But as disturbing events escalate, she begins to fear that something extraterrestrial has followed her home.

“This story is very close to my heart and I’m profoundly grateful it’s resonated with such an immensely accomplished team of creatives,” Varley said when the film was originally announced. “I couldn’t be more excited for audiences to fasten their seatbelts and go on this thrilling ride with us!”

The Astronaut follows up on a year filled with extraterrestrial terror, notably the launch of Noah Hawley’s FX series Alien: Earth, which brings what might be considered the first major sci-fi horror franchise to familiar shores. The film was originally set to be helmed by Scream franchise alum Emma Roberts before Mara stepped in, though the latter is no stranger to horror, having starred in films like Morgan and featuring in the first season of American Horror Story

The Astronaut hits theaters on October 17. Check out the new trailer below:
