The free horror movie streaming services have gone absolutely batty with the terror for the most wonderful time of the year, which is, of course, the scary season. We are adding another service this month, Kanopy, which is totally free, so long as you get a library card from your local library. It is a simple task and gives a great return on time spent. Who knows, you could always check out Mary Shelley's “Frankenstein” while you are there to get ready for the new Guillermo del Toro film.
Pluto has a perfectly respectable list with 38 new titles for October in addition to their streaming Horror, Terror, and Walking Dead Universe Channels, which means you could watch scary movies 24 hours a day if you are that much of a horror aficionado. They have monster movies like Attack the Block, baroque vamp movies like Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, stylish ghost stories like What Lies Beneath, and, speaking of getting ready for an upcoming film, Pluto has the Arnold Schwarzenegger version of The Running Man.
Tubi takes the crown for 2025's Halloween season, at least from the standpoint of sheer volume and deep cuts that they have made available. With eight brand new Tubi originals, 20 movies in a curated selection called Body Bags, in tribute to the John Carpenter film, and populated with slashers and serial killer-thrillers, and finally a list of 141 fright flicks, many of which are also deep cuts and rarities on the horror streaming lists like Brandon Cronenberg‘s Possessor, Charles Laughton's only film, The Night of the Hunter, found footage-faux doc cult film, Lake Mungo, and so many more. So many more. We don't think even the biggest horror achievers could slay this list, but that doesn't mean you can't try.
Vizio has treats for you that include films and television shows, and you know what terrifying TV means, all the more scary things to watch. You can catch The Jester, another movie that has an upcoming sequel, Hellhole, a movie that has fascinating cover art, which people were intrigued by at the video store, and Mike Flanagan's Oculus. On the television series side, Vizio has the post-zombie-apocalypse horror comedy that is pretty brutal at the same time, Z Nation. It's a show that loves to kill off the people that other shows never would.
Enjoy October and always watch more horror movies, but it's especially important this month.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter: During winter break, two students stay in an all-girls boarding school in the company of a terrifying presence in writer and director Osgood Perkins' first feature film. It stars Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Boynton, Lauren Holly, and James Remar. If you are intrigued by his recent films, consider exploring his earlier movies to see how his talents have evolved.
October 10: Under the Skin: A mysterious young woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. However, events led her to begin a process of self-discovery. Directed by Jonathan Glazer, this highly acclaimed film took a decade to develop, and it stars Scarlett Johansson as the siren or explorer of the human experience, depending on how you look at it.
Scream: Wes Craven's masterpiece of scary meta filmmaking from a script by Kevin Williamson that started a franchise that is still going today. David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore in the spine-tingling and gory movie that still made you laugh and launched an ever-changing horror icon in Ghostface.
Men: Filmmaker Alex Garland's third film is described as a surrealistic folk horror film in which a young woman goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside following the death of her ex-husband. Jessie Buckley plays the widow, and Rory Kinnear plays all of the male characters who treat her badly in the village after she arrives.
Timecrimes (2009): A man accidentally gets into a time machine and travels back in time nearly an hour. Finding himself will be the first of a series of disasters of unforeseeable consequences in writer and director Nacho Vigalondo's tale of a time travel paradox. Karra Elejalde, Candela Fernández, and Vigalando star in the scary science fiction film.
October 17: V/H/S: The first film in the V/H/S series, in which a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for. The ten segments, five stories and one frame narrative with five frame narrative interludes, were directed by Adam Wingard (Tape 56), David Bruckner (Amateur Night), Ti West (Second Honeymoon), Glenn McQuaid (Tuesday, the 17th), Joe Swanberg (The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger), and the filmmaking collective Radio Silence (10/31/98), and produced by Brad Miska and Roxanne Benjamin.
October 24: Triangle: This 2009 film has gained significant popularity after being added to Prime. In it, five friends set sail, and their yacht is overturned by a strange and sudden storm. A mysterious ship arrives to rescue them, and what happens next cannot be explained. Melissa George, Michael Dorman, Rachael Carpani, Henry Nixon, Emma Lung, and Liam Hemsworth star in this British and Australian production directed by Christopher Smith (Severance, Creep).
October 31: The Monkey: Writer and director Osgood Perkins takes on a popular short story by Stephen King, and the result is a wild cornucopia of gruesome and shocking deaths and family drama that still manages to be a life-affirming horror comedy. Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O'Brien, Rohan Campbell, Sarah Levy, Adam Scott, and Elijah Wood star in the film, with a hilarious cameo by Perkins.
