The Academy Museum’s Monster Mash Returns For An Exploration Of Femininity In Horror

Halloween season has officially arrived in Hollywood, and the Academy Museum is gearing up to celebrate all things monstrously feminine. The Los Angeles museum has announced that their annual Monster Mash celebration will be returning this year on October 25, and with it comes an entire day of screenings and events that celebrate women in horror.
The day begins with a sound lab analyzing The Bride of Frankenstein at 9AM PT, followed by a screening of the 1935 classic, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, in the Ted Mann Theater at 11AM. At the same time, running though 1:30PM, is a free special effects makeup and hair demonstration in the museum’s grand lobby, featuring artist Gabi Gonzalez and Oscar winners Howard Berger and Yolanda Toussieng.
The Ted Mann Theater will also be host to a screening of The Love Witch in 35mm at 2:30PM, with filmmaker Anna Biller in attendance. Also at 2:30 is a tarot and palm reading session in the Ted Mann Lobby, for those who believe in romance and fate as much as the film’s protagonist Elaine does, and 3PM brings a voice acting workshop in the Shirley Temple Education Studio, giving audiences a chance to test their mettle as a scream queen.
Attendees can also meet the Bride of Frankenstein and her monster in the grand lobby throughout the day, with photo opportunities popping up at 12:30, 1:30, 3, and 4PM, before they dash off for the museum’s Scripted Fright Tours. Meeting at 12, 3, and 4PM on Level Two of the museum, the guided thirty minute tour will take attendees through the museum’s Story gallery, as well as its Bong Joon Ho exhibition, examining artifacts like the script from Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca, the typewriter that birthed the script for Psycho, and the creature designs and storyboards for The Host.
Finally, fans can wrap up their day at 7:30PM in the David Geffen Theater, where a screening of Jennifer’s Body will take place, featuring filmmaker Karyn Kusama and star Megan Fox in attendance, in a conversation moderated by Professor Tananarive Due.
All three Monster Mash screenings are separately ticketed events, with seats available to be purchased on the Academy Museum’s website alongside standard admission tickets.
