If you're fresh out of a showing of Wicked: For Good and looking to fill the Oz-shaped hole in your soul, never fear, because we're here to tell you the good news that, yes, The Wizard of Oz is getting its public domain horror movie adaptation.

Directed by writer-director Elijah J. Alvarez, who also produces via his newly launched Buddy Pictures, Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz stars Michael Sullivan, Logan Laurel, Heidi Appe, Melissa Foster, Aaron Byrd, Rocky Velasco, Angela Michaela, Yvonne Orozco, and Ava Barone.

While you may be thinking “isn't there already a horror(ish) take on the iconic musical fantasy adventure with 1985's Return to Oz?”, The Haunting of Oz takes things in a very different direction. Plot details were reported last week by our friends over at Bloody Disgusting, who tell us that Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz is set on Halloween night in Marin County, California, the film follows a group of college basketball players who are mercilessly preyed on by terrifying manifestations of Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and serial killer clowns:

The campus becomes a battlefield as each murder uncovers deeper layers of torment, including haunting visions of the land of Oz. As dark secrets rise to the surface, the students becomes both hunter and hunted, consumed by their own inner demons.

Here's what Alvarez, who is making his feature debut at just 22 years old, told Bloody about The Haunting of Oz last week:

Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz showcases the real Gen Z student athlete experience in a way most contemporary horror films haven’t done yet […] The way Get Out and Sinners used genre to push it forward hugely inspired this film, and I cannot wait for audiences to watch this genre-bending coming-of-age horror film.”

Inspiring words indeed! While no release date is set in stone, expect Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz sometime in 2026. While you wait, check out a new batch of stills courtesy of Bloody below:
