SINNERS and FRANKENSTEIN lead in awards season nominations and THE UGLY STEPSISTER returns this week
Awards season has been heating up among the top horror movies on streaming this week, which is great news. After The Substance was nominated for Academy Awards and Golden Globes in 2024, people wondered if horror films and actors would return to the spotlight in 2025. The answer seems to be yes, much to the delight of horror fans. Scary movies are always welcome at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, but many deserving films, actors, directors, and other horror creatives were not given the opportunity to compete with films in mainstream award ceremonies for decades.
In the early results, at least three of the most popular and acclaimed fright films have already scored multiple nods or nominations in key categories. For years, fans have wondered why movies from our beloved genre weren't getting their shot, especially when the quality of the films that we love is evident. Until last year, no cinematic terror tale had been nominated for Best Picture since Jordan Peele's Get Out in 2017, but that seems to be changing.
It's no coincidence that the films being nominated are also very popular on streaming services, and it remains to be seen if other films could also be recognized
