Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello, creators of the cult comedy series “Strangers With Candy” alongside Stephen Colbert, are gearing up for a new take on The Wasp Woman.

Dinello is set to write and direct the comedic reimagining of Roger Corman‘s 1959 cult film, with Sedaris starring in the title role.

The official logline reads, “The new film will follow the original plot of ‘The Wasp Woman,’ focusing on Janice Starlin, the founder of a cosmetics company who attempts to reverse the aging process using experimental enzymes derived from queen wasps, with disastrous results.”

“I saw the film, and the sets were so tight, and it’s so claustrophobic, and it just really made me laugh visually, Sedaris told Variety, who broke the news, of seeing the original film. “I just think it’d be a lot of fun to — Are you kidding me? A wasp woman? And just the costumes alone, it seems like it’s going to be like a very artistic film. I’m into that, wardrobe and sets. It’ll be interesting to see who else we get to cast in this movie. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Dinello said, “It also has this very modern story about this former model, a supercharged businesswoman who’s dealing with aging and is willing to take a fringe product to try to salvage her looks or give her youth. When I read it, I did, I immediately thought, ‘This is perfect for Amy.’

Producers include Mark Roberts, who produced the “Strangers with Candy film, Jordan Fields of Radial Entertainment, which owns the Roger Corman library via its Shout! Studios brand, Meyer Shwarzstein of Another Brainy Idea and Michael Richter of A Major Production.

This isn’t the first time Corman’s cult sci-fi horror movie has been remade. Chopping Mall director Jim Wynorski delivered a modern camp update in 1995 with an emphasis on practical effects.

Stay tuned for more on this comedic update as casting gets underway.
