The teaser poster for Undertone wants to be heard ahead of tomorrow’s trailer drop.
The slow-burn horror film premiered at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, igniting a seven-figure bidding war from which A24 emerged victorious.
Nina Kiri (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) stars as the only on-screen character; a paranormal podcast host who moves into her dying mother’s house to be her primary caregiver.
When she receives audio recordings of a young pregnant couple experiencing supernatural noises, she realizes the woman’s story mirrors her own. Each new recording scratches at her sanity, drawing her into a fate she cannot escape.
Writer-director Ian Tuason makes his feature debut on the Canadian production, leading to a gig helming the upcoming Paranormal Activity reboot.
Kris Holden-Ried (“The Umbrella Academy”), Michèle Duquet (The Virgin Suicides), Keana Lyn Bastidas (“The Hardy Boys”), and Jeff Yung (The Shrouds) lend their voices to the movie.
Dan Slater for Slaterverse Pictures and Cody Calahan for Black Fawn Films produce. Executive producers include Steven Schneider and Roy Lee for Spooky Pictures, Chad Archibald for Black Fawn Films, Brit MacRae and Daril Fannin for Kino Studios, and DimensionGate.
Joe Lipsett wrote in his review out of Fantasia, “I can’t remember the last time a movie made every hair on my body stand up, but Undertone got me good.”
Undertone and will have its US premiere at Sundance later this month. It’s expected to hit theaters in the spring.
