Toilets will scare the crap out of you in the Brazilian horror film Bowels of Hell.
Variety reports that Blue Finch Films has picked up international sales rights to ahead of the film’s world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands later this month.
Martha Nowill (“Desperate Lies”) stars as Malu, whose struggles with unresolved trauma and a difficult child take a nightmarish turn when an inexplicable curse brings toilets to life as murderous creatures, plunging her into a bizarre realm where maternal responsibilities, loss, and existential dread intertwine.
Gustavo Vinagre and Gurcius Gewdner co-write and co-direct.
Otávio Müller, Chandelly Braz, Marco Pigossi (Bone Lake), Regina Braga (“Deus Nos Acuda”), Olivia Torres (I’m Still Here), Maria Gladys, and cult filmmaker Bruce LaBruce (Otto; or, Up with Dead People) round out the cast.
Rodrigo Teixeira, Berta Marchiori, and Tereza Alvarez produce via Brazilian powerhouse RT Features (Call Me by Your Name, The Lighthouse).
“We made Bowels of Hell out of a deep affection for horror and with the playful sensibility of childhood — a space where fear becomes tender, and imagination turns darkness into something strangely loving,” said Vinagre and Gewdner.
Blue Finch Films’ Mike Chapman called the project “both a provocative and bold piece of filmmaking from Gustavo and Gurcius. Combining jaw dropping genre moments and profound themes, it will stick with viewers for a multitude of reasons.”
