The barefaced truth comes out in the trailer for The Ugly, a story of generational grief from Train to Busan writer-director Yeon Sang-ho.
The South Korean mystery thriller will be released on Digital on March 10 via Well Go USA. Blu-ray and DVD will follow May 26 exclusively on Amazon.
Based on Yeon’s 2018 graphic novel Face, the film stars Park Jeong-min (Decision to Leave) and Kwon Hae-hyo (Peninsula).
It follows Im Yeong-gyu, a master artisan who has been hand-carving beautiful, engraved seals despite having been born blind. One day, his son Dong-hwan receives a call from the police, informing them that the skeletal remains of Young-hee, their wife and mother, have been found after 40 years.
Determined to find the truth of her disappearance, Dong-hwan begins investigating her death with Su-jin, a producer who has been filming a documentary about Yeong-gyu. Through the memories of those who worked with his mother at a garment factory, Dong-hwan comes face-to-face with the long-hidden truth.
Shin Hyeon-bin, Im Sung-jae, and Han Ji-hyeon (“Hellbound”) round out the cast.
Yeon produces alongside Wow Point, with whom he previously collaborated on “Parasyte: The Grey” and Revelations.
Following its premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, The Ugly received 10 nominations at the 2025 Blue Dragon Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor.
Sang-ho’s next film, the virus thriller Colony, is due out later this year.
