Joko Anwar’s Gore-Filled ‘Ghost in the Cell’ Sells to Well Go USA [Trailer]

Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Impetigore) is back with his latest horror entry, Ghost in the Cell, which has sold to Well Go USA after its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival‘s Forum section.

Variety previously shared the very first international teaser trailer for the horror-comedy that’s set within an Indonesian correctional facility. As usual, Anwar turns the gore up to ten!

The narrative follows inmates whose survival instincts are tested when a mysterious new prisoner arrives, accompanied by a supernatural entity that targets those with the darkest aura. As deaths mount, the incarcerated population discovers that collective action may be their only path to survival.

“Beneath its supernatural surface lies something very real: the massive deforestation in Indonesia and the way this destruction is too often met with silence or neglect,” Anwar said in his director’s statement. “The ghost in this film is not only a presence haunting the cells, but also a reminder of consequences we choose not to face.”

The Indonesia-South Korea co-production is scheduled for Indonesian theatrical release in the second quarter of 2026.
