I was a massive fan of Paramount Pictures’ surprise smash hit Smile (2022), a super-accessible, very scary gateway horror movie that hit all the right sweet spots.
We were gifted with a sequel, and with a third film in development, we’ve also received a brand new comic series to hold us over…and it’s wicked.
Smile: For the Camera is IDW’s take on the iconic horror movies brought to you by horror star Hannah Rose May (The Exorcism at 1600 Penn) and Miriana Puglia (Disney Villains: Cruella de Vil + Maleficent) as we follow models’ glamorous, gory descent into insanity. Get ready to smile like you mean it.
Taking place in 2005, Smile follows five young international models who have just landed in New York City, ready to tackle four grueling weeks of runways, press, and cameras as they try to make it big. The girls become fast friends…until one seems to crack under the pressure. Little does everyone know that she is afflicted by the entity, a being bent on destruction and pain as it seeks to destroy lives through its horrific visions.
IDW has previewed Smile: For the Camera #3 this week and offered up a look at what will be a highly sought-after variant cover by Swaby. The variant mimics a glossy fashion magazine cover, showing a stylish model in blue while a blood-soaked, grinning doppelgänger lurks behind her, clutching her shoulder with dripping crimson fingers.
In the third issue:
“The party ended with a slash. A series of tragedies have spread throughout the fashion world, but those in power have been quick to cover them up, leaving Lena and her fellow models to do whatever they can to survive.
“While Lena tries to run from the disaster, Ivy finds that it’s not so easy. The powerful figures in her industry are hell-bent on profiting off the models—trapping Ivy in this dazzling world that’s set on turning her into another statistic. Is there anyone she can trust? Or will Ivy be trapped in this gilded cage with the Entity on a killing spree? The modeling industry is full of monsters, not all of them supernatural.”
Pre-order at Third Eye Comics with a scheduled release.
