A24 took a big swing on Ian Tuason‘s indie undertone, and it paid off with a solid $9.3M box office opening. It’s not quite Paranormal Activity numbers, and we’ll have to wait until the film’s second weekend to see how much legs it has, but I suppose it could become a franchise.
Tuason reveals to ScreenRant that he has a whole trilogy planned for undertone to build on the horror movie’s shock ending.
When asked about the film’s ending and whether he has any plans for building on the world of his A24 horror thriller, the writer/director told the site that “I have a trilogy in mind” for the story, and that he and A24 are “working on” finding a potential path to make it happen.
As the site remembers, undertone follows Evy and Justin as they investigate eerie audio recordings from a couple, Mike and Jessa, who document the mysterious hauntings in their home. As they dig deeper, Evy begins experiencing disturbing hallucinations of her mother around the house, leading the pair to suspect they are being tormented by the female demon Abyzou, who could become the central figure in a new franchise.
It’ll be interesting to see if this comes to fruition, especially considering Tuason is already attached to direct the next Paranormal Activity for Blumhouse.
undertone was incredibly divisive amongst audiences. What did you think?
