Regular Show is easily one of the best animated series of its time, blending offbeat humor with surreal, often creepy storytelling that hit perfectly for my nostalgia-driven generation.
Creator J. G. Quintel clearly drew on strong horror influences, with many episodes structured like condensed genre films hidden within a cartoon.
Episodes like “Terror Tales of the Park” (anthology horror inspired by Creepshow), “Ello Gov’nor” (following a possessed dummy ala Child’s Play), and “In the House” (Poltergeist) all follow simple setups where something normal turns sinister, while paying direct homage to classic horror films.
There are also multiple references to Evil Dead and Army of Darkness scattered throughout the series, along with plenty of nods to VHS-era horror that reinforce its retro, genre-inspired tone.
Now, Regular Show returns this spring with a new installment, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, once again centered on Mordecai and Rigby, best friends who live and work at a local park. Their mundane routines inevitably spiral into surreal chaos, much to the frustration of their boss and coworkers.
There are three “Terror Tales of the Park” anthology episodes in Regular Show, each parodying classic horror tropes, so I was excited to learn that the new show will have not one, but two new “Terror Tales of the Park” episodes, both of which will combine into one half-hour-long Halloween special!
Here are the deets…
