Okay, okay, okay, I know, I know, it’s a superhero trailer, but Lobo is a f*@king badass, and maybe one day we get a full-blown R-rated adaptation of the character, if, you know, if Supergirl does well.
This June, Lobo plays a pivotal role in the Supergirl movie, which perfectly casts Milly Alcock in the dual role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El.
In the film, when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
Enter Jason Momoa‘s Lobo. Even more perfect casting.
Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 (1983), created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen as a relatively straightforward alien villain. The character was later radically redefined in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when writer Keith Giffen and artist Simon Bisley transformed him into an ultra-violent, irreverent antihero known for graphic brutality and dark humor, particularly in titles like Lobo: The Last Czarnian (he also killed Santa Claus in The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special, which got Bisley in a heap of trouble with DC).
Bisley’s exaggerated, heavy-metal-inspired artwork played a major role in cementing Lobo’s R-rated tone and cult popularity. Decades later, the character’s debut in a major film adaptation has generated significant anticipation among fans familiar with his comic book legacy.
Supergirl opens in theaters and IMAX on June 26.
