Zach Cregger is preparing for blowback from fans, as he recently stated he expects them to “crucify” him for his ‘Resident Evil’ reboot
To this day, we have yet to see a Resident Evil film that’s been fully embraced by the fans. According to Zach Cregger (Weapons), the filmmaker doesn’t expect that to change with his upcoming reboot.
During an interview with the New York Times, Cregger said as much when he offered that he expects fans will “crucify” him if his film deviates from the lore.
For Cregger’s Resident Evil, he’s aiming to capture the intensity of the Capcom games without adapting an already pre-existing story. “I love the idea of being pitted against a world that is hellbent on annihilating you. It just feels fun and I haven’t seen a movie that offers that sort of experience.”
Cregger previously told SFX Magazine, “I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games. I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.”
At this time, plot details are still being kept close to the vest. But it sure sounds like Cregger is preparing for the blowback from fans who may want something that feels more like a traditional Resident Evil game.
Cregger directs from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (John Wick Chapters 3 and 4).
Austin Abrams (Weapons), Paul Walter Hauser (The Naked Gun), and Zach Cherry (“Fallout) star.
Resident Evil rises from the dead and into theaters on September 18th via Sony.
