The Resident Evil super fans are making themselves heard, and many are incredibly wary of Zach Cregger‘s take on the famed video game series.
As a fan myself, and also someone who has covered this industry for more than 25 years, I’m not exactly sure where the disconnect is or what the main fan base is expecting, but everything we’ve heard so far makes me excited – and it’s hard to bet against the man behind Barbarian, Weapons, and the absurdly funny WKUN John Williams skit.
Digressing, there’s been some flip-flopping about how far Cregger has strayed from the source material, even though the screenplay leaked online a few weeks ago. Still, the only thing that matters is the end product and how well it’s received and how it performs at the box office – you know what they say, winning cures everything.
Everything I personally have heard about Resident Evil is positive. Extremely positive. This syncs up with what industry insiders are whispering to each other, and now there’s intel from an early test screening of the film, which teases this new take as a nonstop horror-thriller ride in the vein of Fury Road. Wild.
“A test screening recently occurred for Resident Evil, and it went very well, with reactions strongly positive,” reports World of Reel. “Early word is that Cregger hasn’t just made another video game adaptation — he’s delivered something lean, mean, and very confident.
“The runtime is 90 minutes, and it’s apparently all gas, no brakes,” they add. “The film is said to be almost entirely built around tension. One attendee I spoke to called it a horror version of Fury Road.”
Producer Roy Lee has previously discussed what we can expect from Cregger’s Resident Evil and it lined up: “It’s like a roller coaster ride of nonstop action,” he said.
