The Child’s Play series ranks among my favorites, with sequels like Child’s Play 2 and Bride of Chucky arguably topping the original, all while maintaining canon for more than 35 years.
Maintaining a franchise’s continuity has its limits and can eventually wear thin, as the recent Scream and Halloween films show, which makes it important to find ways to mix things up.
Don Mancini, creator of Child’s Play and Chucky, has done just that, maintaining full canon across multiple sequels and three seasons of a television series, excluding the MGM/Orion remake he had no involvement in.
After Seed of Chucky leaned into a lighter, more self-aware tone, pushing the series further into self-parody, Don Mancini took the franchise in a new direction with Curse of Chucky, a standalone, single-location sequel that preserved continuity with a late twist, ultimately laying the groundwork for the eventual series, Chucky.
The series Chucky would eventually run for three gleeful seasons, pulling together seven films’ worth of mythology into nonstop, gonzo chaos that brought every major character and storyline into one collision of madness. I loved it; however, it has run its course.
Since wrapping its third season in 2023, fans have been wondering whether Chucky will continue or if Mancini will bring the Lakeshore Strangler back to the big screen.
We now have our answer: Don Mancini revealed at Steel City Con this weekend that he is in the process of writing the next Child’s Play movie, as CriticalOverlo3 first discovered on a chat late last night. Dread Central can confirm the validity of the information.
Not only is Mancini mixing things up with a new feature film, but he also aims to reset the Child’s Play franchise once again, similar to what Curse of Chucky did, while still maintaining a loose connection to the series finale.
Now that the direction is clear, the question becomes whether this reset will focus solely on Chucky, leaving out characters like Tiffany and Glen/da, and setting fans up to start asking for their return all over again.
