Dark Star Pictures has acquired U.S. rights from Filmoption International to 2025 Fantasia Film Festival premiere Lucid and will distribute theatrically and digitally this year, ScreenDaily reports.
The film tells the story of Mia, an art student on the verge of being expelled from school, whose last hope for combating her creative block is a magical lucid dreaming elixir.
Awakening her creativity, the potion also unleashes dark monsters within her subconscious, one of which is her mother, who appears as a hairy monster that Mia is forced to confront.
Deanna Milligan and Ramsey Fendall directed Lucid, shot in 35 mm and Super 8 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Caitlin Acken Taylor, Georgia Acken, Amber Dandelion, and John Luna star alongside Vivian Vanderpuss, who also designed the hair monster costume.
The trippy art-punk film received its European premiere at Sitges and debuted in the U.S. at Brooklyn Horror. It opens theatrically in Canada through Filmoption on May 29.
“Lucid is exactly the kind of daring, genre-bending filmmaking we love championing at Dark Star – it’s visually hypnotic, emotionally raw, and unapologetically weird in all the right ways,” Dark Star president Michael Repsch said.
Emanuel Foucault served as producer and Peter Phok from Pearl is executive producer.
