IG user 1amsiny0 has created a fascinating sound re-design for A24’s ‘Backrooms’, taking viewers step by step through the process.
I love a good sound design. Before deciding to study screenwriting in college (should’ve picked sound), I considered a career in creating movie soundscapes. Read my list of horror films with exceptional sound design here. Liminal horror in particular provides a great space for introducing otherworldly atmosphere, as seen by the fan-made soundscape for A24’s Backrooms below.
South Korean sound designer Yohan Shin (aka, Sinyo), released the video through his IG. In it, the creator takes viewers through his process of re-designing the soundscape for Backrooms step by step.
Notes Sinyo, “This time, we’re diving into the world of horror sound re-design. I focused on the aggressive use of noise textures to create an unsettling, glitch-in-reality atmosphere. In this breakdown, I’ll show you my perspective on how to design horror and how I rebuilt this disturbing soundscape from the ground up.”
What follows is a well-crafted and spine-tingling soundscape that left me impressed. If you’re interested in creating sound design or just a fan of the process, this is a good window into how it’s done. Sinyo appears to have quite a few videos discussing sound creation for movies, so make sure to give them a look if you enjoy his take on Backrooms.
Based on Kane Parsons’ long-running web series, the filmmaker’s Backrooms follows Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor as a furniture store owner who discovers a portal to a strange, empty office space hidden in the back of his shop.
Renate Reinsve, Lukita Maxwell, and Finn Bennett also star.
