‘Resident Evil’ – Zach Cregger Honoring the Games With “Progressively More Intense” and “Weirder” Story
In a recent interview, Zach Cregger discussed the “progressively more intense” and “weirder” approach he’s taking to ‘Resident Evil’.

The trailer for Zach Cregger‘s Resident Evil released earlier this morning (see below), and it looks like everything us fans have been begging for from the franchise. Scary. Bloody. Intense. And packed full of terrifying creatures. Audiences have been waiting a long, long time for an RE film that both honors the games and satisfies expectations. The Weapons filmmaker appears destined to finally do just that. Based on a new interview with IGN, it sure sounds like he’s put everything he can into making this the best experience for fans possible.
While speaking with the outlet, Cregger had this to say: “What’s important to me, that I’m honouring from the games, is the narrative structure and following one character from point A to point B, and the concern with resource management, ammunition conservation. We start with a pistol, we graduate to a shotgun, we graduate to an MP5, and things are just getting progressively more intense, and we’re encountering weirder and weirder monsters.”
Anyone who has played the games knows that they normally start off small. A creepy noise there. Something in the shadows there. Nothing to protect yourself but a measly pistol. And then the first monster appears. Followed by something bigger than that. And then something even bigger. And so on.
You can sense how this is going to play out through the trailer, with Austin Abrams‘ character first encountering zombies. Then whatever that Baron Harkonnen-looking creature is in the sewer. And whatever that nightmare fuel is that’s crawling out of the cabin. Cregger’s comments have me hoping and praying that Abrams eventually gets his hands on a rocket launcher. It’s Resident Evil tradition, after all.
By all accounts, I think we’re about to get the Resident Evil film we deserve. I’m happier than ever that Cregger is the one to do it.
Resident Evil follows Bryan (Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival, as one fateful, horrifying night collapses into chaos around him.
It also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, Zach Cherry, and Johnno Wilson.
