Drafthouse Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Gloria Mercer’s SXSW psychological thriller A Safe Distance, reports ScreenDaily.
Aidan West wrote the screenplay about a woman abandoned by her boyfriend in a forest who gets sucked into a web of attraction, rebellion, and violence after a chance encounter with a pair of fugitives.
Bethany Brown, Cody Kearsley, Tandia Mercedes, and Chris McNally star.
The producers are Nic Altobelli of Area V5 Pictures and Mercer and West of See Horse Films.
Vortex Media holds Canadian rights, and Giant Pictures will commence sales in Cannes next week for the rest of the world.
A Safe Distance is “exactly the kind of elevated, character-driven thriller that resonates with international audiences – visually striking, emotionally charged, and anchored by stand-out performances,” says Madeleine Schumacher, head of content at Drafthouse Films.
A Safe Distance premiered in SXSW’s Narrative Spotlight section in March.
