20-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons appears to be on the cusp of a major Hollywood breakout as Backrooms sets its sights on a May 29 release, with current box office tracking reportedly pointing toward a $20 million-plus opening weekend.
As most viewers know, the film is a continuation of Parsons’ viral Backrooms short films, which exploded in popularity online and helped establish him as one of the most closely watched young creators working today.
At the same time, A24 appears to be positioning itself aggressively in the franchise space. The studio has increasingly invested in young filmmakers and online creators, bringing emerging talent into its growing horror slate.
Among the projects currently on the horizon are the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, as well as a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film and television project. Now, with Backrooms under its control, the company may have another major franchise taking shape.
With a $20 million-plus opening currently being forecast, speculation has already begun surrounding a potential sequel. According to Parsons himself, those conversations may already be happening creatively behind the scenes.
Over the weekend, Parsons responded to a fan on social media, noting that he not only has ideas for a limited series but also sees a sequel as part of the franchise’s future. Nothing has been officially announced at this point, but the comments offer a clear indication of where the creative thinking may be headed next.
Given the direction A24 has been moving in recently, the possibility of expanding Backrooms into a larger franchise appears to make a great deal of sense.
