It took a long five years between Terrifier and Terrifier 2 to hit theaters. I helped acquire it, market it, distribute it, and do the whole enchilada; I lived the entire process from the front lines. One thing I can say about Damien Leone, the director and creator of the franchise, is that he passionately cares about his fans, almost to a fault.
But fans are what drive everything.
He built that fanbase through one-on-one interactions, convention appearances, and genuine appreciation for the horror community that embraced the films early on. Between Damien, David Howard Thornton (who plays Art the Clown), producer Phil Falcone, and everyone else involved, the team spent years boots on the ground, shaking hands, taking photos, and personally thanking fans for supporting this insane little indie slasher franchise that somehow exploded into a worldwide phenomenon.
That’s part of why it was painful for them to take so long to get Terrifier 2 into theaters. So, after the unbelievable success of the sequel, Leone strapped on his boots and immediately got to work on Terrifier 3 to get another movie into theaters for the fans as quickly as possible.
Having been directly involved in producing that film, I can tell you right now: that timeline was a crunch.
It was hard. It was exhausting. It was nonstop.
Through sheer determination and incredible support from the team around him, Terrifier 3 ultimately made its theatrical debut on October 11, 2024, arriving less than two years after Terrifier 2 shocked the industry with its breakout success.
Now, when it comes to Terrifier 4, there’s clearly a balancing act happening between urgency and not wanting to rush the creative process just to hit a date.
With that said, Damien Leone has been actively working on the screenplay and keeping fans updated throughout the process on social media. Last week, he surprised everyone with a major reveal: Terrifier 4 is going to take place during New Year’s Eve.
As horror fans know, Terrifier 2 unfolded during Halloween, while fully embraced the Christmas season. Naturally, many assumed the next film might jump to Valentine’s Day. Instead, Leone appears to be taking the franchise into an entirely different holiday setting.
