‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ Sequel Rumored to Go Bigger and “Twistier” with Double the Budget
Lionsgate‘s President of International, Helen Lee-Kim, revealed ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ will be “twistier” with rumors of an expanded budget

The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, became a tremendous success for Lionsgate, pulling in over $400 million globally. With that, the studio was quick to announce a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, bringing back most of the same team. Unsurprisingly, we’re now hearing that the sequel will go bigger and twistier, with double the budget.
Deadline reports this morning that they’re hearing The Housemaid’s Secret‘s budget will land somewhere in the $70-80 million range, double that of the first film.
Not only that, but Lionsgate‘s President of International, Helen Lee-Kim, revealed to the outlet some more details on the scope of the film. “It’s an expansion of the world from the first film. The second book is even twistier and it’ll be a more unexpected movie. It’ll be structured a little differently. We’re aiming to be filming by year’s end. The whole creative team is back, as are Sydney [Sweeney] and Michele Morrone who has a bigger role in the second film. Kirsten [Dunst] is aboard, and then we have two other fun male roles that we’re casting now.”
Considering the success of the first film, none of this is all that shocking. But it does reveal the studio’s confidence in the project, as well as their commitment to delivering for the fans. As someone who had a good time with the twisty camp of The Housemaid, I’m certainly excited.
“Based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, the sequel picks up as Millie (Sweeney) — who was hired in the initial story as the live-in maid for a wealthy family with a dark secret — takes a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see — only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.”
Paul Feig is back to direct alongside screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first book.
Feig will produce with Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, Laura Fischer of Pretty Dangerous and Sweeney through Fifty-Fifty Films.
