South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, best known for the zombie hit Train to Busan, is celebrating a strong home-market debut for his zombie thriller Colony, which drew nearly 200,000 moviegoers Thursday for the biggest opening day of the year.
The Korea Times reports that the Korean film recorded 199,768 admissions on its opening day, according to data released by the Korean Film Council on Friday.
The site notes that it logged the highest number of first-day admissions this year, outnumbering the previous record held by the Hollywood comedy The Devil Wears Prada 2 at around 150,000.
Colony marks Yeon’s return to the zombie thriller genre, following survivors trapped in a quarantined building during an infection outbreak, battling ruthless infected beings.
In it, Professor Se-jeong as she is thrust into a terrifying hellscape when a mutating virus is unleashed during a biotech conference, forcing authorities to seal the facility to contain the outbreak. Unable to escape, Se-jeong and a group of survivors must fight to stay alive as the infected undergo horrific transformations and threaten to spread the virus.
Colony stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Ji Chang-wook, bringing together a high-profile cast for what is expected to be an intense, character-driven survival story.
Well Go USA will release the hotly anticipated film here in theaters everywhere on August 28, 2026.
