Danny Boyle Aiming to Begin Filming Third ’28 Years Later’ Movie Next Year
Filmmaker Danny Boyle has revealed that he hopes to begin filming the third film in the 28 Years Later trilogy next year…we sure hope so.

You could say I’m a big fan of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s 28 franchise. While no entry has topped the fresh intensity of the original 28 Days Later, each has delivered a terrifying story alternating between nihilistic despair and desperate hope. Fans like myself have found ourselves flip-flopping between those two states of mind as we wait to know the fate of the planned third film in the 28 Years Later trilogy. Rejoice, fellow 28 heads, because it’s beginning to sound more and more like it will actually happen.
In a recent interview with JoBlo, Boyle had this to say about shooting the next 28 Years movie, “We ran out of time. It’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film in certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time. So it’ll be, hopefully, next year. But there’s the enthusiasm there and Alex (Garland) has done a wonderful script for it.”
Now, this obviously isn’t a confirmation that the film is for sure happening. As Boyle himself notes, he will “hopefully” begin shooting next year. Hopefully doesn’t mean it will.
We find ourselves in this state because, as of this writing, the third 28 Years Later film hasn’t officially been greenlit by Sony. Plans had been in place, and then Nia DaCosta‘s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple failed to infect audiences, not even scraping back its budget through the worldwide box office returns. Not ideal. Certainly not a project studios want to invest loads of money in.
But, between these comments and a recent post by star Alfie Williams about being back in character, signs point to the third film happening at some point. Lets hope that’s the case. Because if not, we rage.
Bone Temple is a continuation of the epic story where Dr. Kelson () finds himself in a shocking new relationship with consequences that could change the world as they know it, and Spike’s () encounter with Jimmy Crystal () becomes a nightmare he can’t escape.
