It’s no surprise that a sequel to Obsession seems inevitable. The film continues to shatter records and has quickly become one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time. The real question isn’t whether Obsession 2 will happen – it’s whether a follow-up can match the standard set by the original.
That’s a challenge many major franchises have struggled to overcome, but writer-director Curry Barker appears ready to take it on.
Despite being immersed in a whirlwind of success, juggling post-production work on Anything But Ghosts and writing a new installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Barker says he already has an idea for Obsession 2. More importantly, it sounds like a project he would want to direct himself rather than hand off to another filmmaker.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Barker said:
“I don’t want to go straight into Obsession 2. I have such a cool idea for it that I won’t say. I’m not saying it has to be five, six years from now. But I think people would be just as excited for it if it came a little down the road. It’s a whirlwind and I’m trying to figure it out.”
While Barker isn’t rushing into a sequel, his comments make it clear that he already has a vision for where the story could go. For fans eager to return to the world of Obsession, that may be the most encouraging update yet.
