The filmmaker behind ‘Hatching’ is back with her next grisly fable about maternal love, ‘Nightborn’, coming to Shudder this month.
Hatching filmmaker Hanna Bergholm is proving to have quite the infatuation with monstrous children, as we have our first trailer for her next film, Nightborn. And, well, if you liked Hatching as much as I did, let’s just say it looks right in line with Bergholm’s grisly debut.
With dreams of starting a perfect family, Saga (Seidi Haarla, Compartment No. 6) and her British husband Jon (Rupert Grint, Knock at the Cabin) move to the isolated house where she spent much of her childhood, deep in the Finnish forest. But as soon as their baby is born, despite the reassurance of all around her, Saga knows there’s something terribly wrong with her son. As their marriage starts to crack, Jon struggles to support his wife, but only Saga suspects the terrible truth about her newborn.
Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey, John Thomson, and Silvia Saloranta round out the cast.
The film is described as “a visceral, gripping and terrifying dark fable about motherhood and unconditional maternal love.”
Hanna Bergholm directed from a script she co-wrote with Ilja Rautsi.
In the trailer, we watch Saga and Jon face the vicious consequences of caring for a monstrous child with a taste for blood. It looks nasty, visceral, and strangely beautiful…all of the ingredients that made the filmmaker’s Hatching such an outstanding debut.
