Netflix is sending Josh Hartnett to battle against a sea creature in its new series, Below, created by The Umbrella Academy‘s Jesse McKeown.
The six-episode limited series follows dogged Newfoundland fisherman Calvin Penney (Hartnett) as he fights to protect his loved ones and preserve his disappearing vocation as a mysterious sea creature wreaks havoc upon the local community.
In an effort to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and their family safe from harm, he joins forces with marine researcher Fonda (Mackenzie Davis) to learn more about the creature that lurks below the waves and, along the way, their island’s hidden history.
EW premieres the first images from the series, which drops in full on October 8.
When it came to crafting the series, McKeown tellsthe magazine that Below draws inspiration from a mixture of “old school, hand-crafted, genre movies” from directors like Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, as well as its rural setting’s local legends.
“I always knew I wanted to make something here in Newfoundland. Preferably something big. And something strange,” he says. “Something that taps into the terrifying ruggedness and isolation of the place. But also something that captures the overwhelming warmth and the eccentric brilliance of the people here.”
