The cast of ‘They Follow’ just got a big update, as Jackie Earle Haley and various others have signed on for the sequel.
Big news for those of you eagerly anticipating They Follow (me), as Deadline reports that Jackie Earle Haley (pictured above as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake) has joined the cast! He’s far from the only one set to be “followed” by the entity, though. Also joining are Justine Lupe (Succession), Anna Mirodin (Ivan), Jayne Taini (Unbelievable), Michael Gandolfini (Daredevil: Born Again), Tom Pecinka (Stereophonic), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Ben Krieger (Song Sung Blue), Natalie Shinnick (The Brutalist), and Jan Hoag (The Fabelmans).
They’ll be led by returning star Maika Monroe (Watcher), as well as Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice).
David Robert Mitchell will once again write/direct, with Disasterpeace returning to do the score.
At this time, there are no details on the plot, though we know it takes place a decade after the events of the first film.
It Follows remains one of my favorite horror films of the last decade or so. Fresh, engaging, and terribly frightening, the film made Maika Monroe a star and marked an exciting new voice in Mitchell. A sequel has been teased ever since. So, while expected, it still feels like a pinch me moment that it may actually happen soon…even if I’m a little unsure how you top the first one.
Looking at the cast taking shape, though, I’m beginning to see a path. When Mitchell made It Follows, he did it largely with unknowns at the time. Now, Monroe is a star, and she’s not the only one in a cast consisting of multiple big names. Haley especially has me excited, as I have to imagine he could be set to play some sort of villain. I think we could all agree that when it comes to the remake, his Freddy wasn’t the problem.
