Could Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ Pilot Be Turned Into a Feature?!
Could Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ pilot be turned into a feature film? Rumor has it the filmmaker is shooting for just that.
We’re all waiting anxiously to see what Ryan Coogler (Sinners) is going to deliver with his new take on The X-Files. What I did not expect, however, is that Coogler’s pilot could actually be turned into a feature film.
That sounds like it could be the case, though, as World of Reel reports that not only was Coogler’s two-hour pilot shot on 65mm, but the filmmaker has asked Disney to consider turning it into a feature. Whoa.
The outlet notes that Hulu has yet to greenlight the series, and only the pilot has been shot (it wrapped production earlier this month).
Also worth noting is that the pilot was shot by Coogler’s Sinners DP, Autumn Durald Arkapaw. You may remember that Arkapaw won an Oscar for their stunning work on the film.
Even without Disney’s official approval yet, it seems like a no-brainer to release the pilot in theaters. For one, it’s not often that a TV pilot is shot on 65mm. To me, that implies that this was always the plan for Coogler. The filmmaker has long championed the theatrical experience, and I’m right there with him. You’ll never convince me that watching movies at home is better than a theater, obnoxious patrons be damned.
Besides, what better way to introduce audiences to Coogler’s new take than on the big screen, where everyone can have a communal experience together? That used to be how TV worked, with fans all watching the same episode and talking about it at the water cooler the next morning. I miss that.
Nor is it uncommon these days for a TV episode to make its way to theaters. Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, and others have done it. Why not The X-Files?
We’ll wait to see if there’s any movement on this, but for now…I want to believe.
