Watch the Stunning New ‘Clayface’ Trailer That Proves James Gunn Wasn’t Kidding About the Horror

If there was any doubt that Clayface was going to be a full-blown horror movie, Warner Bros. just erased it.

The second full trailer for the upcoming DC Studios film has arrived ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. While the first trailer hinted at the film’s gruesome transformation horror, this latest look fully embraces it, delivering unsettling body horror that feels closer to David Cronenberg than a traditional superhero movie.

The visual effects have taken a noticeable leap forward, with grotesque transformations that look creepy, disgusting, and genuinely terrifying. And if this is what Warner Bros. is willing to show in a trailer, it’s hard not to wonder what they’re still holding back.

The moment that immediately got under my skin comes aboard an airplane, where Clayface finds his eyelids fusing shut and desperately reaches for a pair of scissors. It’s a simple sequence, but it’s the kind of visceral imagery that instantly gave me goosebumps and perfectly sells the movie’s horror ambitions.

As we’ve previously reported, James Gunn has repeatedly described Clayface as a true horror film rather than a conventional comic book adaptation, and this trailer only reinforces that promise.

The film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Basil Karlo/Clayface, a B-movie actor who injects himself with a mysterious substance in an attempt to stay relevant, only to discover he can reshape his face and body into anything he can imagine. But his newfound gift soon mutates into a horrifying curse.

Also starring are Naomi Ackie, Leo Woodall, Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, and Richard E. Grant.

It is directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan, based on the iconic DC character.
