Adam Wingard just made it official that ‘Onslaught’ and ‘The Guest’ take place in the same universe, and it’s kind of a sequel.
Fans of Adam Wingard‘s The Guest (me) have been speculating for a while now that the filmmaker’s new movie, Onslaught, could be a secret sequel to the Halloween-set banger. Thanks to an appearance by the director at SDCC and a video from The Associated Press, we now have our official answer.
Says Wingard in the video below, “I look at this as a cap on the trilogy between The Guest and You’re Next. It’s not like a direct sequel, in the sense that it’s a continuation of those characters, but it takes place in the same town as The Guest. The idea is that the secret programs we’re seeing going on here are other little aspects of the same thing David’s character came from in The Guest. I mean, you could actually call this technically a sequel to The Guest. It’s in the same universe.“
So, while not quite a sequel to The Guest, Onslaught is basically a sequel to The Guest, as we all expected.
Continues Wingard, “The main throughline is the city it takes place in is Moriarty, which is the same city that The Guest takes place in.“
All of that should excite fans. Not only because it’s a fun connection, but because we saw how well Wingard can direct tense action sequences with The Guest. To think that we could be getting a larger, more propulsive story set in the same universe and with a similar leaning towards high-octane thrills? Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my lips.
The cast is stacked with familiar genre faces, as well. Joining star Adria Arjona is Dan Stevens (The Guest, Cuckoo, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire), Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator), Rebecca Hall (The Night House, Godzilla vs. Kong), Drew Starkey (Queer), (), (), and UFC champion , who reportedly plays a villain known as The Butcher.
