Jeff Hays, the acclaimed narrator and producer behind the blockbuster Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobook series, has joined Peacock and Fuzzy Door’s live-action adaptation as the voice of the beloved Princess Donut, it was revealed at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con.
The announcement was made live before a packed crowd during Penguin Random House’s “Spotlight on Matt Dinniman” panel at Comic-Con, with Hays surprising fans during a conversation between series writer and executive producer Chris Yost and author and co-executive producer Matt Dinniman.
Peacock gave a straight-to-series order to Dungeon Crawler Carl, a live-action series adaptation of the crazy popular science fantasy LitRPG (role-playing game) books, last month.
The project, which had been in development at the streamer, comes from Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door and Universal Global Television where the company is based.
In Dungeon Crawler Carl, an alien invasion has wiped out most of humanity, and any survivors are forced to fight for their lives on a sadistic intergalactic game show. Sounds bad, right? Now try doing it with bare feet and a stuck-up, self-centered, tiara-wearing talking cat as your partner.
Welcome to Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, where the apocalypse will be televised … and Coast Guard vet Carl finds himself stuck with his ex-girlfriend’s award-winning show cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, as they try to survive the end of the world, fighting monsters, aliens, an insane A.I. and even other survivors … all for the sake of good TV. Survival is optional. Entertainment is not.
The casting is fitting given Hays’ longtime connection to the franchise. His narration has become inseparable from the books for many fans, helping propel the series into one of the biggest audiobook successes in the world.
Based on Matt Dinniman‘s No. 1 New York Times bestselling novel series, Dungeon Crawler Carl has sold more than 14 million copies across all formats worldwide. The Audible editions, narrated by Hays, have amassed more than 140 million listening hours, while Ace Books’ print editions have sold more than 6 million copies and have spent more than 115 weeks on the bestseller list.
