Last week belonged to Resident Evil.
Between a brand-new trailer, first-look images, and a steady stream of interviews, Zach Cregger has been teasing what promises to be a radically different take on Capcom’s iconic survival horror franchise. Now, Empire Magazine has debuted another new image alongside a few more tantalizing details from the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons.
One thing is abundantly clear: Cregger isn’t pulling any punches.
“It’s definitely the most violent thing I’ve done,” he tells the mag.
For a director whose previous films haven’t exactly shied away from bloodshed, that’s saying something.
Cregger explained that he wanted to push the horror as far as he could. “You gotta go grotesque!” he said. “I wanted to go all the way. So it’s gnarly. It’s brutal. A very bloody affair.”
Despite being a longtime fan of the games, Cregger says his focus isn’t on cramming the film with franchise mythology or explaining every corner of the Resident Evil universe. Instead, he’s aiming to capture the feeling of playing the games.
“Fleshing out what [the Umbrella Corporation is] up to and how the T-virus works, that’s not what this movie is,” Cregger explained. “This movie is about one dude’s journey on foot, fighting monsters. I don’t give a fuck about checking boxes.”
Instead, he says his only goal was telling an entertaining horror story that wastes no time getting started.
“All I cared about was just telling a fun story,” he said. “[One in which] we step on the gas at about eight minutes in and never take our foot off the floor.”
