Obscured Releasing Acquires North American Rights for ‘Ugly Cry’
Get ready to have a good cry this Fall, as Obscured Releasing has acquired the North American rights to body dysmorphia horror, ‘Ugly Cry’.
Get ready to tear up. Some months after its world premiere at SXSW, Obscured Releasing has acquired North American rights to horror pic Ugly Cry, reports Deadline.
The film “follows a young Hollywood actress’s dark descent into body dysmorphia as she struggles to fulfill impossible beauty standards.”
We’ve seen quite a few films like this as of late, from The Substance to The Ugly Stepsister, Saccharine and many others. I say keep them coming until society finally owns up and stops putting so much pressure on women to meet the impossible standards these filmmakers are speaking out against.
Writer/star Emily Robinson also directed for her feature debut.
Ryan Simpkins, Aaron Dominguez and Robin Tunney also star.
Producers are Sophia Sabella, Pablo Feldman, and Jolene Mendes of More Avenue and Rhianon Jones and Tristan Scott-Behrends of Neon Heart Productions. Executive producers include Debbie von Ahrens, Jim Robinson, Kyle Campbell, Troy Press, Bella Appel, Darci Price, Galileo Mondol, Todd Remis, and David Wetzel.
Said Robinson, “Ugly Cry contemplates the horror of having a body in the age of the internet. What’s scarier, cringier, and funnier than modern society? Our collaboration with Obscured began at SXSW, which made it clear no one understands our genre-bendy feature better than they do. We’re thrilled to be partnering with them for our North American release.”
In his review out of SXSW, Dread’s Chad Collins wrote, “Emily Robinson’s Ugly Cry is a grounded, dysphoric body horror about the very real cost of fame and success.”
The plan is to release Ugly Cry in theaters this fall before coming to digital platforms later this year.
