While TIFF’s Centrepiece section isn’t traditionally where horror fans go looking for scares, this year’s lineup features three genre titles that immediately caught our attention.
The biggest is Inherit from director Banjong Pisanthanakun, the filmmaker behind Shutter and co-director of The Medium. Starring Davika Hoorne, the film follows Woranart, a grandmother possessed by a demon, in what TIFF describes as a chilling psychological thriller.
If you’ve somehow never seen Shutter, fix that immediately.
Released at the tail end of the J-horror boom—even though it’s actually a Thai horror film—Shutter remains one of the scariest movies of the 2000s. If you’re a fan of The Ring, The Grudge, Pulse, or that entire era of slow-burn supernatural horror, Shutter belongs at the very top of your watchlist. It’s packed with unforgettable scares and builds toward one of the best twist endings the genre has ever delivered.
That’s exactly why Inherit has immediately shot to the top of my TIFF list.
Today, Screen Daily debuted the film’s first teaser trailer, and it’s giving off all the right vibes. It’s moody, restrained, unsettling, and feels cut from the same cloth as Shutter—a slow-burning supernatural mystery that looks like it’s hiding plenty of surprises. Whether it ends up reaching the same heights remains to be seen, but considering Banjong’s track record, this is easily one of my most anticipated films of the entire festival.
