Meet ‘Verity’ in the Trailer for a Psychosexual Thriller With Shades of Stephen King

Things are about to get seriously twisted between Anne Hathaway (The Witches), Dakota Johnson (Suspiria), and Josh Hartnett (The Faculty, 30 Days of Night, Trap) in the first trailer for Verity, Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s New York Times bestselling novel.

And while Hoover might not immediately scream horror, the Verity trailer has shades of some of Stephen King’s best psychological thrillers, mixed with a Hitchcockian mystery and a whole lot of sexual tension.

The film follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), who moves into the remote home of renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) to ghostwrite for her after a devastating accident has left Verity seemingly unable to continue working.

While digging through Verity’s material, Lowen discovers what appear to be the author’s autobiographical notes, filled with increasingly disturbing confessions involving her husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett).

And then things get really weird.

The trailer plays with whether Verity is actually as incapacitated as everyone believes, with Lowen repeatedly catching glimpses of her moving through the house. At the same time, Lowen is becoming increasingly entangled with Jeremy, creating a psychosexual mystery where it becomes difficult to tell who is manipulating whom, what’s real, and whether everything we’re watching is part of some elaborate setup.

It looks intense, sexy, and surprisingly nasty.
