“You can’t duplicate what Betsy did, which was to play this devoted mother,” Cardellini told Deadline. “So I can take that and sort of bring that to the early childhood years of Jason’s life.”
And Jason appears to be at the center of everything.
“I also think that you don’t get to where Betsy is without really truly loving Jason and getting to know him,” Cardellini added. “That was really important to us going in.”
There will even be at least one little visual connection to Palmer’s Pamela. Cardellini teased that “a certain sweater” will make an appearance, while revealing that the filmmakers actually considered giving her Pamela the character’s familiar short hairstyle before deciding she still has plenty of time to get there.
Of course, this is still Friday the 13th, and Kane promises they aren’t skimping on the nasty stuff.
“A lot of the gags in the show are very complicated,” Kane added, specifically praising Cardellini for repeatedly nailing elaborate special effects sequences that were difficult to reset.
That fits with Kane’s comments during the panel about approaching the franchise as a lifelong fan. He recalled seeing Friday the 13th Part III in 3D during its original theatrical run in 1982, describing the experience as a gateway into horror and the wider world of film.
“I’m thrilled with what we made. I’m very proud of the show,” Kane said. “And hopefully, people will just go on a fun ride with it.”
Crystal Lake premieres Thursday, October 15, on Peacock.
