‘Beware Boiúna’ Trailer Pits Jessica Rothe Against an Enormous Amazonian Snake

“Witness terror on a gigantic scale.”

Lionsgate dropped the first trailer and official poster today for Beware Boiúna, and that wonderfully punny tagline pretty much tells you exactly what you’re getting: a giant fucking snake movie that looks like it’s taking itself just seriously enough.

The survival horror movie comes from director Mike P. Nelson, who has already built himself a nice little résumé in the genre with Wrong Turn, Silent Night, Deadly Night, and his “No Wake” and “Ambrosia” segments from V/H/S/85. This time, he’s heading deep into the Amazon with Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), Kiana Madeira (Fear Street), and Logan Marshall-Green (Upgrade).

According to the official logline, “Deep in the Amazon, a medical mission spirals into a fight for survival when Boiúna, a colossal ancient predator, awakens to reclaim her domain. In the jungle where nature holds absolute power, she decides who lives and who dies.”

The trailer looks like a blast. We’ve obviously had giant snake movies before, with Anaconda still being the obvious reference point, but Beware Boiúna appears to be playing things much straighter and nastier. There’s a little Predator in the jungle survival setup, a little Aliens, and enough chainsaws, machetes, blood, and screaming to suggest Nelson isn’t holding back once things really get moving.

And then there’s the poster, which might be even better. The entire design is built around this eye-catching wall of scales, paired with the hilariously perfect tagline, “Witness terror on a gigantic scale.” It’s simple, ridiculous, and exactly the kind of poster a giant snake movie deserves.

The film has already earned an R rating for “bloody violent content, some grisly images, and language.”

This looks like a pretty ideal way to kick off October. Rothe going toe-to-toe with an enormous Amazonian snake while Nelson throws every nasty survival-horror trick he has at the screen? I’m in.
