Mutant Brought the ‘Camp Miasma’ Universe to Life in the Dreamiest Way [Exclusive]

One of the most striking aspects of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is the opening scene, flush with horror merch. As Jane Schoenbrun’s satirical slasher takes hold, you can now own a piece of cinematic history, thanks to Mutant. The collectible company has the limited-edition horror movie merchandise game on lock lately. For example, Mutant released an exclusive Leviticus soundtrack vinyl, with a red smoke record and illustrated cover art by Sachin Teng. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein received an ornate, equally cool treatment.

When Mubi approached Mutant to make Teenage Sex and Death products, it was one of the easiest merch assignments yet, Mutant co-founder Eric Garza told Dread Central. “A big part of that is because the film itself does such a great job of creating this [Camp Miasma] universe,” Garza said. “There’s such a meta read to the film, and this Miasma franchise exists in the context of this film — and it’s so wonderfully fleshed out.”

Fellow Mutant founder Mo Shafeek explained how the company has made mostly horror-adjacent merch for some 15 years. “When this movie starts with a treasure trove — a dream collection of merchandise — for horror fans in the opening credits, it immediately spoke to us as both fans and as people who have made this kind of stuff for years,” Shafeek said. Both Shafeek and Garza previously worked at Mondo, a subsidiary of Alamo Drafthouse that specialized in limited-edition film-related physical media releases.
