‘Scream’s’ Skeet Ulrich has been tapped to play a cult leader in the psychological horror film ‘Deify’, based on true events.
Actor Skeet Ulrich (pictured above in Scream) has a certain charm that makes him difficult to resist. Just ask Sidney Prescott. He’s the kind of guy you might imagine following anywhere. So, it makes sense that he’s been cast as a cult leader in the indie horror flick Deify, reports Deadline.
Also cast in the film is Neal McDonough (Ravenous).
In Deify, “a cult leader is put on trial after causing his devoted followers to be burned alive.”
McDonough plays the assistant attorney general and prosecuting attorney, a man of integrity who profoundly believes in the criminal justice system. Ulrich plays the enigmatic and manipulative cult leader, who pleads insanity and claims to be taking his commands directly from God.
The psychological horror film hails from brothers Carmelo and Nicholas Chimera.
That premise has a slight Exorcism of Emily Rose vibe. We don’t see many courtroom horror films, so this could be interesting, especially with Ulrich and McDonough on board.
Deadline notes that elements of the script were inspired by events surrounding the 1993 Waco, Texas standoff between members of the Branch Davidians church and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. It was apparently one of the largest civilian firefights ever recorded on American soil.
Producers are Jordan Gianeschi and Jacob Rice, along with Mike Manning. McDonough and his wife Ruvé McDonough will executive produce.
The film is set to shoot in Chicago at an undisclosed date.
